Botulinum toxin

Presentation Botulinum toxin or Botox is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It acts at the neuro-muscular junction, more precisely within the cholinergic fibres, preventing the release of acetylcholine in the motor plate, thus causing paralysis of the affected muscle group. Used since 1980 in neuro-ophthalmology for the treatment of strabismus and blepharospasm, the indication for treatment with botulinum toxin has rapidly spread to other pathologies such as spasmodic torticollis, facial hemispasm, writer's cramp, but also to very diverse specialties such as gastroenterology, urology, proctology, gynecology and more recently to the treatment of hyperhydrosis. It was Prof. Carruthers of Vancouver in Canada who discovered the positive effect of botulinum toxin on wrinkles, allowing aesthetic medicine to take a huge leap forward. Botulinum toxin is currently a major treatment for wrinkles, especially those on the upper face, by neutralising the muscle contractions responsible for expression lines. A natural smoothing effect is thus obtained, which lasts for 4 to 6

Before and after botox

Treatment The treatement is spread over 2 or 3 sessions. It begins with a muscular diagnosis, because each patient is unique. Photos are then taken and injections are given. The patient will come back after 2 to 3 weeks to make corrections if needed. After the treatment, one may feel a slight heat, a slight tightness or an erythema, which will improve spontaneously. What about botox? Botox is botulinum toxin. The word botox has been spread by TV series but it is a brand name.
